Update on Smoking Types and Oral Health

Update on Smoking and Oral HealthThe adverse affect smoking has on oral health has been established for many years. As a cosmetic tooth whiteness issue: tobacco products of all kinds (this includes smoking, dipping, chewing, and smoking cigars and pipes) will discolor teeth. Nicotine is a factor in dry mouth, which increases the chance of tooth decay. Many smokers are looking for ways to lessen smoking’s impact on their general health, and their oral health. Have you wondered if using marijuana (where it is legal) or e-cigarettes (vaping) affects your oral health?

Marijuana Use and Oral Health

Scholars at the University of Arizona analyzed data from marijuana users in New Zealand. The study participants were followed for up to 38 years. The largest oral health impact for regular marijauna users was an increase in periodontal disease by age 38. Periodontal disease includes diseases of the gum and surrounding tissue. Periodontal disease can lead to minor issues (such as bad breath) and to major issues, such as tooth loss. Periodontal disease has also been linked to cardiovascular problems, although the connection is not fully understood. The study was not able to determine whether the increased periodontal issues were due to marijuana use specifically, or to poorer oral care habits, and increased use of alcohol by those who smoked marijuana.

E-Cigarettes (Vaping)

There are no conclusive studies at this point, that address the long term affects of vaping on oral health. Nicotine is know to contribute to dry mouth, so vaping will produce nicotine-related dry mouth and related periodontal issues. There is some research that indicates some flavorings may affect tooth color or overall health with prolonged or intense use. Unpleasant surface breath odor (not caused by infection or decay) appear to be less of an issue than with cigarette use. Most dentists recommend patients refrain from smoking, vaping or using nicotine in any form, as much as possible. If you do use these products, regular check ups and cleanings will help us help you take the best possible care of of your teeth and mouth.
