Brushing And Flossing: What’s Going Wrong (And Where)?

You are told from the time you are a kid to brush and floss your smile. When we see you, we ask you about your dental hygiene habits and we essentially pick up where you leave off, cleaning your teeth with a professional dental cleaning. This removes plaque and tartar missed by your toothbrush and dental floss. So, why are we so thoroughly and consistently performing all of this? What might go wrong (and where)? We’re glad to explain.

Decay Can Happen To Any Dental Tissue

When you’re not brushing and flossing, you can end up with decay just about anywhere on your teeth. This is why you need to not only brush as part of dental hygiene but floss, too! In addition to the obvious places where cavities form (like on chewing surfaces), they can form between your teeth, on the lingual side of teeth, and any other surface you can think of. Brush and floss like we suggest to prevent such an occurrence.

Infection May Develop Beneath Gums

When you don’t remove plaque through brushing and flossing, you may end up with inflamed gum tissue. Bacteria collect and populate the space just beneath your gumline, where they will irritate gingival tissue. The tissue becomes inflamed the infected if you aren’t careful. We can detect the changes during a dental checkup. In the meantime, however, the problem may begin as gingivitis and can become periodontal disease if you don’t receive professional treatment. The moral of the story is: Perform your dental hygiene.
